The Mahindra group recently declared their financial results for the year ending March 2009. The Gross Revenues and other Income for the year ended 31st March 2009 grew by 8.9% to approx AUD 8.31 Bn/ NZD 10.1 Bn. This growth in revenue has been despite the financial crisis that hit the world in September last year impacting economic growth across the globe. The Mahindra Group comprises of 97 Subsidiaries, 4 Joint Ventures and 11 Associate companies.

Mahindra had record sales of 120,202 tractors during this financial year, which includes the sales of the “Swaraj” Brand of tractors, a company it acquired in Aug 2008. It continues to be the market leader in India, the world’s largest tractor market, for 26 successive years in a row now, and ended this financial year with an enviable market share of 40.8%,

To consolidate its operations in China, the second largest and one of the fast growing tractor markets in the world, Mahindra recently inaugurated its second Joint Venture in the country. The new company, Mahindra Yueda Yancheng Tractor Company, has been formed between Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Sector and Jiangsu Yueda Yancheng Tractor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a leading Chinese tractor manufacturer. This Joint Venture Company ceremoniously rolled out its 125 HP tractor at a colourful ceremony at the company’s new 38,000 tractor capacity plant at Yancheng, last month.

Apart from having manufacturing facilities in India and China now, the company also has two assembly plants in USA. The company pre-dominantly manufactures tractors in the 20-80 Hp range. It also sources compact tractors from Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery of Japan, and distributes these under the “Mahindra” brand in select countries.

Mahindra is known for making tractors with brute strength. The axles and 3-point hitches are bigger, thicker, and more solid: this provides greater stability and control in handling the most difficult tasks. Their rugged cast-iron chassis make them a lot heavier than most other tractors of similar size and horsepower. Even fenders and other sheet metal components are reinforced and use a thicker gauge of metal for greater strength and durability.

In 2007, Mahindra became the only tractor manufacturing company in the world to receive the coveted Japan Quality Medal for excellence in Total Quality Management, awarded by the by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers.
